The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) has officially published the 2019 Bar Exam Statistics.
This annual report provides all final data gathered from the states regarding the February (Winter) and July (Summer) bar exams in the United States.
10,039 people took the exam in February; while 46,370 people took the exam in July.
- 10,039 people (46%) passed in February
- 29,834 people (64%) passed in July
In total, 58% passed the exam throughout the year.
This was an overall improvement YoY from 2018 when 54% passed the exam (41% in Feb.; 60% in July). It remains the 2nd lowest passing rate in 12 years; however numbers did near 2017 levels.
The United States has been demonstrating a significant decline at three levels:
- The # Taking the Bar (falling 18.6% since 2013)
- The # Passing the Bar (falling 30% since 2013)
- The Overall Pass Rate (falling 14.7% since 2013)
2019 reversed that trend with the first increase in more than 5 years at all levels.
This improvement was also seen at the state level as passing rates improved in general throughout the country in both February and July YoY. Some states showed 15% or higher improvements.
