Once the tax returns have been submitted, it is time to begin tracking your tax refund. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and most states provide an online tool referred to as “Where’s My Refund,” which provides updates and details regarding the processing of your return and (if applicable) the release of your refund. To use this tool, the respective websites generally require some or all of the following details from taxpayers:
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Date of Birth (DoB)
- Filing Status
- Single (S)
- Married Filing Jointly (MFJ)
- Married Filing Separately (MFS)
- Head of Household (HoH)
- Qualifying Widower (QW)
- ($) Amount of Expected Refund*
*If you owed money instead of expecting a refund, you can usually input $0.00 or $1.00 for the expected refund.
When no refund is anticipated, the tool can still be used to track the processing and finalization of your return. Many locations will also provide similar information over the phone (typically via an automated system), but the online resource may be faster.
To aid you in monitoring your return, a list is provided below of links to the websites and the direct phone numbers for the IRS and state agencies**.
**Certain states (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming) do not have individual income taxes and do not provide the “Where’s My Refund” tool.
Where’s My Refund?
After a tax return is accepted, the IRS will begin to update the “Where’s My Refund” tool. Input your social security number, filing status, and the amount of your expected refund.
The tool tells you details about the status of your return (Under Review, Processing, Ready for Payout) and eventually an estimated date and method for the refund payout.
If they garnished or altered your refund, there may be details about that as well.
